University of Toronto, Canada

Professor Peter Dirks: Is Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. He research programme seeks to determine whether a normal neural stem cell or progenitor cell is transformed into a brain tumour.  He has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the pathophysiology of brain tumours, most notably in characterising the glioma cells with some cell properties that drive tumour growth. His group also tests for compounds that specifically target these glioma stem cells.
